LinkedIn for job seekers

Post your way onto the shortlist

A job search is the moment you have the least spare attention and the most to gain from being visible. Applications put you in a pile of two hundred. Posting puts you in front of the people who build the pile — and it works whether or not you ever mention that you are looking.

Why it pays off

Recruiters search, then they read

Once your profile comes up, what you have published is the difference between a generic outreach and a specific one.

It demonstrates instead of claiming

A CV asserts that you are good at something. A post that works through a real problem in your field shows it, to anyone who reads it.

It reactivates a dormant network

Most roles come through weak ties. Posting reminds several hundred people you exist without asking any of them for a favour.

It works before you are ready to announce

You can publish useful thinking for weeks before you ever say you are looking — and often you will not need to.

What to actually post

Five post types that work for job seekers, in rough order of how well they perform.

  1. 1

A problem from your last role, worked through

Not where you worked. What was hard, how you approached it, what you would do differently. This is the single most effective post type for a job search.

  2. 2

A teardown of something in your field

Analyse a product, a campaign, a process. It shows judgment, which is what hiring managers are actually screening for.

  3. 3

What you are learning right now

A search leaves time. Publishing what you are studying turns a gap into evidence of momentum.

  4. 4

    A genuinely useful resource

The checklist, template or process you built and still use. Useful things get saved and shared, which puts you in front of second-degree connections.

  5. 5

    The direct one, once

A clear post about what you are looking for, what you are good at and how to reach you. Once, well written — not weekly.

How often

Two posts a week is plenty, and it should never crowd out applying and talking to people. Write them in one sitting and schedule them so the search itself never has to compete with the content.

What to avoid

  • Making every post about the search. Roughly one in five, at most — the rest should be useful to someone whether or not they are hiring.
  • Apologetic framing. Being out of work is common and unremarkable; writing about it as a failure invites people to read it that way.
  • Vague availability posts with no specifics. 'Open to opportunities' gives a reader nothing to act on. Name the role, the sector and the problem you want to solve.
  • Going quiet the moment you get an interview. Momentum takes weeks to build and days to lose, and most processes fall through.

The hard part is not knowing what to write

It is turning the thought into a post on a Tuesday when six other things are on fire. LinkGenie learns how you write from posts you have already published, drafts from a rough idea or a voice note, and schedules the result through LinkedIn's official API.

Common questions

Should I post on LinkedIn while job hunting?

Yes, and it is one of the highest-leverage things you can do with the time. Posting puts you in front of hiring managers and recruiters who would never see your application, and it demonstrates judgment in a way a CV cannot.

What should I post on LinkedIn when looking for a job?

Mostly work — a problem from a previous role worked through honestly, a teardown of something in your field, what you are learning, or a resource you built. Post directly about your search occasionally and specifically, not every week.

Should I turn on Open To Work?

The recruiter-only setting is low risk and worth switching on. The public green banner is a genuine trade-off: it makes you easier to find and it signals availability to everyone, which some people would rather control. Posting well does more than either setting.

How do I post consistently while applying to jobs?

Batch it. Write two or three posts in one sitting each week and schedule them, so the search never competes with the writing. A search is exactly when your attention is scarcest, which is why the habit usually collapses without scheduling.
